Starting Over After 60: My Journey Through Struggles, Survival, and New Beginnings

Introduction

My name is Scott. I’m not famous, not a celebrity, just an ordinary person who has lived through extraordinary challenges. I have a love for writing and decided to start this blog to share my journey—one filled with health struggles, financial hardships, and perseverance. My hope is that my story will resonate with others who may be going through tough times and searching for a way forward.

Part 1: The Beginning of My Health Battle

For years, I battled congestive heart failure (CHF), a condition that affected every aspect of my life. Despite my worsening health, I continued working at a call center in Portland, Oregon, trying to support myself and my family. My commute was long and exhausting, and the stress only added to my health struggles. Applying for Social Security Disability (SSDI) felt like a never-ending battle, filled with denials and setbacks.

Part 2: A Life-Changing Call

One day, while commuting to work, I received a call from my cardiologist that changed everything. My CHF had significantly worsened, and I needed to take immediate action. My heart was struggling, fluid was building up in my body, and my medication wasn’t enough to manage my condition. Still, I pushed through, trying to balance work and my deteriorating health.

Part 3: The Pandemic and Medical Leave

Then came March 2020. The pandemic turned the world upside down, and for me, it meant more stress and uncertainty. My condition made me high-risk, and working in a call center environment was no longer an option. I applied for FMLA (Family and Medical Leave Act) due to my worsening condition. My doctors implemented strict lifestyle changes: I had to adopt a sodium-free diet and take new medications. In May 2020, I underwent surgery to have a pacemaker and defibrillator implanted.

Part 4: Financial Struggles and Caregiving

With unpaid medical leave, our household lost a significant source of income. My wife lost her job, and we had to rely on unemployment benefits. To stay afloat, we moved in with my in-laws and took on the role of caregivers. Managing our own struggles while taking care of them added another layer of stress to an already difficult situation.

Part 5: More Health Setbacks and The Long Road to Recovery

In late 2020, my device check revealed a pacemaker wire issue. Because of the pandemic, my surgery was delayed for six months. Meanwhile, my ejection fraction (EF) rate—a measure of heart function—dropped to a dangerously low 19%. I spent most of 2021 focusing on recovery, trying to regain strength and stability.

Part 6: Natural Disasters and Family Relocation

As if things weren’t difficult enough, wildfires in Oregon forced us to temporarily relocate to Idaho. After a few weeks of uncertainty, we returned to Portland and attempted to rebuild our lives. My wife and sister-in-law went back to work, while I remained unable to contribute financially due to my health condition.

Part 7: The Battle for Disability Benefits

Despite multiple applications, my SSDI claims kept getting denied. Desperate for financial relief, I consulted an electrobiologist, "Dr. T," who helped me reapply. Even then, the process was painfully slow. I eventually hired a disability lawyer, and after years of waiting, I was finally approved in 2022, receiving my first check in 2023.

Part 8: Exploring Virtual Work and Falling for Scams

Even with SSDI benefits, I needed additional income. I started looking into online opportunities, but I quickly learned how easy it is to fall into scams. I attempted to secure a loan but ended up losing money in a financial scam. Then, I discovered Chime Bank referral bonuses and made a small income before the program ended. I also dabbled in affiliate marketing and other online side hustles, but I kept falling into the trap of "shiny object syndrome"—chasing one get-rich-quick scheme after another.

Part 9: Moving to a New Home and Increased Expenses

In 2023, our daughter made the tough decision to place my in-laws in assisted living. That meant my wife and I needed to find new housing. Due to past financial struggles and bad credit, securing an apartment wasn’t easy. But we finally found a place in Battleground, Washington. Unfortunately, the increased cost of living made things even harder.

Conclusion

Life has thrown many challenges my way, but I refuse to give up. I’ve learned valuable lessons about resilience, financial hardship, and the importance of perseverance. My journey is far from over, and I’m still searching for new ways to adapt and build a better future for myself and my family.

To be continued...
